New Fortress of Corfu
The New Fortress of Corfu consists of a Venetian construction on the hill of Agios Markos in the city of Corfu, built in stages.
The original construction of the castle was done by the Venetian engineer Ferrante Vitelli, followed by the current constructions by the British. At the top of the castle there is a stone construction for defensive purposes and a red brick one which is the seat of the Corfu Naval Station.
The fortifications by the British and the French were made to strengthen their defense against the Ottoman invasions. The fortifications include 700 artillery buildings along the Albanian coast.
After the first great Ottoman siege of Corfu, the Venetians decided to significantly strengthen the old Byzantine fortifications of the city.
