The New Fortress of Corfu consists of a Venetian building on the hill of San Marcos in the city of Corfu, was built in stages.
The original construction of the castle was done by the Venetian engineer Ferrante Vitelli, followed by the current constructions by the British. At the top of the castle there is a stone structure for defensive reasons and a brick one which is the seat of the Corfu Naval Station.
The fortifications were built by the British and the French to strengthen their defense against the Ottoman invasions.
The fortifications include 700 artillery buildings along the Albanian coast.
After the first great Ottoman siege of Corfu, the Venetians decided to significantly strengthen the city’s old Byzantine fortifications.
